Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Ties for First Place

The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) tied for first place as the best pediatric medical center in the country, according to the annual study conducted by U.S. News & World Report. The publication ranks the medical centers based on their performance in 10 pediatric specialties: cancer, cardiology and heart surgery, diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology and GI surgery, neonatology, nephrology, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopedics, pulmonology, and urology.

Wells Fargo Awards $3 Million to 54 Community-based Environmental Groups

Wells Fargo & Company and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) announced that 54 environmental nonprofits were awarded grants totaling $3 million from the 2014 Wells Fargo Environmental Solutions for Communities grant program, including the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation.

Lockheed Martin's Moorestown, New Jersey Facility Selected to Provide U.S. Air Force with Space Fence Radar to Safeguard Space Resources

Lockheed Martin's Moorestown, New Jersey Facility Selected to Provide U.S. Air Force with Space Fence Radar to Safeguard Space Resources

The U.S. Air Force has awarded Lockheed Martin a $914 million contract to improve the way objects are tracked in space and increase our ability to prevent space-based collisions. Lockheed Martin's Space Fence solution, an advanced ground-based radar system, will enhance the way the U.S. detects, catalogs and measures more than 200,000 orbiting objects.

Recently, the CEO Council for Growth and JOIN, in partnership with the Drexel Center for Labor Markets and Policy, released a detailed analysis of the Greater Philadelphia regional labor market. This thorough examination of the region's labor supply and demand, the first of its kind for the region, was developed to aid regional employers, funders, education and training providers, and community members in strategic planning and decision-making related to human capital and talent initiatives.

Sidney Kimmel Foundation Gives $110 Million to Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University

Thomas Jefferson University has received a $110 million gift—the single largest in its history—from the Sidney Kimmel Foundation. The gift will benefit Jefferson Medical College, which will be renamed the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University.

Amazon to Add 500 Full-time Employees

Amazon.com is hiring hundreds of employees at its Middletown, Delaware site in New Castle County. The News Journal reported the added positions will boost employment at the Middletown site to 2,000. Amazon opened the fulfillment center with incentives from the state and the Town of Middletown in 2012.

On June 18, Select hosted a dinner for site selectors with several investors to showcase some of the region's assets. Select was joined by the City of Philadelphia Department of Commerce, the Office of International Business Development of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Brandywine Realty, Drexel University, GSK, and Stradley Ronon. Earlier in the week, Select, the City of Philadelphia, PIDC, the University City Science Center and other partners conducted a tour of The Navy Yard, the Science Center and other regional assets as part of the World Forum for Foreign Direct Investment.
