Recent Study Finds Philadelphia Traffic Better than Most

Here's a fact that will make I-95 and Schuylkill Expressway travelers breathe a little sigh of relief: highway commuters in our region spend 15 fewer hours a year in traffic compared with other major metropolitan areas. Our yearly average of 48 hours is almost half that of D.C.'s, and two thirds of New York City's. Philadelphia, the 5th most populated metro area in the U.S., even scored lower than smaller cities such as Denver and Oklahoma City. Less time spent in traffic also means lower stress levels for commuters and less excess fuel used in the region.

Rowan University Propels Economic Growth

More than $108 million a year: that's the economic impact Rowan University is having on Glassboro, NJ, according to Econsult Solutions, Inc. (ESI). What's more, ESI also found that the university's impact throughout the entirety of New Jersey is an astounding $1.23 billion a year, which includes 9,200 jobs and $19 million in taxes. Key Rowan communities, including Glassboro, Camden and Stratford, are also benefiting from private investment, increasing real estate values and new job creation, not to mention thousands of volunteer hours provided by students each year. Numerous projects including multi-million dollar engineering and business buildings, and a new residence hall will have a further catalyzing effect.

Alpha Technologies Set to Expand in Wilmington

Statewide high-speed internet infrastructure is one of the many factors that convinced Alpha Technologies to purchase an 87,000 square foot property in downtown Wilmington, for an expected 200 new employees. The IT solutions consulting firm also found the location attractive because of the nearby Amtrak station, hotels, and a newly constructed apartment complex which could house employees. Alpha Solutions, headquartered in Doylestown, PA, invested $1.85 million in the property which will be used as a training center and “Center of Excellence” providing IT services, among others. The company plans to maintain its original operations in Doylestown.

Two New Hospitals on the Drawing Board

Both Burlington County in southern New Jersey and Montgomery County in southeastern Pennsylvania are looking at plans from local health systems to build new hospitals. Virtua Health is proposing a $1 billion, 10-building complex with an anticipated 3,400 employees in Westampton, NJ to replace their Mounty Holly hospital. Likewise, Lankenau Medical Center, a Main Line Health hospital, is planning a Level 2 trauma center that will fill the need for urgent care services in southern Montgomery County and northern Delaware County.

Saxbys Headquarters Following its Target Market to Center City

For Saxbys Coffee's CEO Nick Bayer, affordability and vibrancy are features that convinced the hospitality company to set up headquarters in 7,000 square feet of space on Chestnut Street in Center City, Philadelphia. These factors also appeal to the growing millennial population within the city; a trend that Bayer believes will benefit the company, which expects to hire at least 100 new employees in the region.

Local Company's Technology Making Global Impact on Juice Quality

Molecular solutions company Invisible Sentinel, Inc. based at the University City Science Center, has introduced technology that is poised to change the way fruit juice bottlers manage product quality. Called Veriflow® ACB, the technology accurately and quickly detects the bacteria which can spoil juice products. Europe's largest dedicated bottler of juices, Refresco Gerber, partnered with Invisible Sentinel on commercializing the technology which has been called “paradigm-shifting.” It reduces the time it takes to detect the decay of spoilage organisms from seven days to three hours.
