Regional Efforts to Promote STEM

Pennsylvania was recently awarded a $500,000 grant from the National Governor’s Association so that it can create a statewide network of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Centers. The centers will enable students in the state to focus on developing skills in these academic areas and, therefore, promote the creation of a talented, robust STEM-oriented workforce. Such a workforce would better position regional students for the dynamic, knowledge-driven economy. This development complements recent efforts by The Greater Philadelphia Regional Compact for STEM Education and its efforts to gain broad-based support for STEM initiatives. This compact, led by the Delaware Valley Industrial Resource Center (DVIRC) and also supported by Select Greater Philadelphia and the CEO Council for Growth, advocates for a commitment among institutions and organizations to work together to advance STEM initiatives across the region.

Statement from Mark S. Schweiker on I-80 Tolling

"Last spring, the General Assembly worked hard to reach a workable solution to fund transit and transportation through increased Pennsylvania Turnpike tolls and the tolling of I-80. Today, the need for funding improvements to Pennsylvania’s infrastructure is more apparent than ever following the release of information on the condition of Pennsylvania’s bridges. For this reason, we encourage our Congressional delegation to support the compromise reached by the Pennsylvania General Assembly. The potential harm of increased traffic on local roads near I-80 can be minimized; the benefits to all Pennsylvanians of I-80 tolls are tangible and undeniable," said Mark S. Schweiker, President & CEO of the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commer and the Chairman of the CEO Council for Growth.
