YOU DID IT!! Non-stop Flights from Philadelphia to Beijing

Select is happy to report that the regional business community's hard work has paid off! The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has approved US Airways' request for nonstop service to China.  Select reached out to the local business community requesting their participation in a letter-writing campaign to DOT explaining the important impact their decision had on Greater Philadelphia's economy. The Greater Philadelphia business community's backing of this new route to China certainly impacted the DOT's decision.  The ability to access the Asian market through direct flight service will enhance Greater Philadelphia's competitiveness as a place to locate a company and it will help open China as a market opportunity for firms here.

Higher Education Study Highlighted on PhillyInc Blog

The Philadelphia Inquirer’s business blog PhillyInc.biz posted information about Select’s higher education study. Entitled, “Lotsa Pizza?” the blog posting highlighted the study’s finding related to spending by Greater Philadelphia’s college students. The study found that beyond tuition, room and board, students spend an average of $8,000 per year per student. The posting also pointed out the other impacts of higher education on the region including gross economic impact ($15.2 billion), spending on capital projects ($3.7 billion) and numbers of degrees awarded (67,169.)

Select Provides Commentary on Local Headquarters Jobs

Select's president Thomas G. Morr recently provided commentary for a Philadelphia Inquirer article on Philadelphia 's attraction as a location for company headquarters. The article noted Bureau of Labor Statistics finding that the number of "headquarters" employees in the area has increased considerably since 2001. Morr commented, "The economy of this region today is based on businesses that are up and coming rather than declining..."

Select's Web site is Awarded Important Economic Development Designation

The Economic Development Directory recently awarded Select with a Development Information Award for its Web site: www.selectgreaterphila.com. The Web site is now certified to contain economic development information organized for the requirements of site selection consultants, real estate departments and business people. These awards were created so that site selection consultants would immediately know which Web sites housed the type of information necessary to perform their job responsibilities.
