Christiana Care Expands Wilmington Hospital

Christiana Care Health Care System's Wilmington Campus will soon undergo a five-year, $205 million expansion. Construction, which will begin in the Spring of 2008, will add 337,000 square feet to the facility, making the entire campus one million square feet. Another 62,000 square feet of existing space will be renovated during the expansion, but all medical services will continue to be provided throughout the construction. Newly built patient rooms will include natural lighting and space for visiting families. Changes will also include:

  • A nine story, 286,000 square foot tower that includes 13 new Operating Room Suites, replacing the existing 10 operating rooms; 30 new patient beds and an Intensive Care Unit; and the capacity for up to 90 additional patient care beds;
  • A new 61,000 square foot Medical Office Building (10,000 square feet renovated plus approximately 51,000 square feet of new construction);
  • Doubling the physical size of the Emergency Department and its related services.

BURLINGTON COUNTY, NJ

The Garden State Gets a New Green Building

Liberty Property Trust recently completed construction on its four-story, LEED-certified "green" building in Mount Laurel, NJ. Located at 330 Fellowship Road, the building includes "elements designed for environmental protection and energy savings ranging from water use, to HVAC and other mechanical systems applications." According to Liberty, the 103,075-sf class A office space sits on 20 acres of land and is part of a bigger project named "Liberty Walk at East Gate", which will ultimately include a total of four LEED buildings.

CAMDEN COUNTY, NJ

Healthcare Campus of the Future

Virtua Health recently announced its plans to build a $500 million medical center that they are billing as the "Healthcare Campus of the Future." The new project, which will break ground in early 2008, will be heavy on both technology and ambiance. Virtua is working with GE Healthcare to create a digitial environment including portable computer tablets for medical staff instead of paper charts and files, eye-in-the-sky video cameras in patient rooms for patient monitoring and check-ups, and computer keyboards with flat-screen TVs for patients so they can access their medical information, search the Internet and check e-mail. The campus will also feature large windows to maximize natural light, noise-absorbing material, outdoor gardens and trails, and patient rooms with considerable space for families. The entire medical campus will cover 1.7 million square feet, potentially employ 4,200 people and include a 368-bed hospital along with an outpatient center, hotel and conference center. GLOUCESTER COUNTY, NJ

Erdner Bros. Inc., a Swedesboro motor freight transportation company was the recipient of a $36,700 Workforce Development Grant awarded by the New Jersey Department of Labor. Developed by Gloucester Community College, the grant makes training courses available through the College's Business and Industry Training Center. This includes classes in business communication, team building, customer service skills, computer proficiency, welding, general distribution operations, and transportation and materials moving.

MERCER COUNTY, NJ

New York-based Company Chooses NJ for its Mid-Atlantic HQ

A New York-based information technology management software company, CA, has opend its Mid-Atlantic United States headquarters in Ewing. PrincetonSouth Corporate Center is a new 104-acre office park, which will house more than 300 of CA's sales, development, marketing and other professionals. CA will also use the new space to host meetings and conferences for employees, customers, and partners.


SALEM COUNTY, NJ

New Development in Woodstown

Exciting new development is taking place in Woodstown, which will soon result in
a revitalized area of pavers, a courtyard, and four distinct Victorian-style storefronts. Planned for the demolished Owen Supply site, the development is expected to be complete by the summer of 2008. The first building to open on the property will be Pennsville National Bank. BUCKS COUNTY, PA

Pet Pharma Sells Stock on Nasdaq

Yardley-based Velcera Inc., a specialty pharmaceutical company, has begun selling its stock on Nasdaq's over-the-counter Bulletin Board. Velcera's lead product is the Promist drug delivery system, which will provide pet owners with a tool for administering medications to their pets. Promist provides a metered dose of liquid mist formulation that can be sprayed into an animal's mouth. Velcera became a public company in the first quarter of 2007 as the result of its merger with Denali Sciences, Inc., a publicly reporting shell company.

CHESTER COUNTY, PA

Local University Breaks Ground on Science and Technology Building

Lincoln University of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania recently broke ground on a new $29 million science and technology building. The development is part of the college's academic initiative to increase the number of minorities pursuing advanced degrees in the sciences. With eight computer labs, six chemistry labs, 10 high-tech classrooms, two 100-seat state-of-the-art lecture halls with video conferencing and high technology capability for distance education, and 20 labs, a dark room, a greenhouse, a student lounge and science library - the building will be equipped to support the school's biology, chemistry, mathematics and computer science departments.

DELAWARE COUNTY, PA

Main Line Health Expanding into Delaware County

After a four year search, Main Line Health has finalized two real estate deals to buy 107 acres in Concord Township for $22.5 million.The Bryn Mawr-based health care system expects to spend another year gaining government approvals. Plans include a two phase development process, beginning with a 100,000 square foot office and outpatient center. Half of that building would focus on diagnostic and outpatient procedures, while the other half would be a medical office building. The building will initially have 90 to 180 beds, but eventually that number could increase up to 360. It will mark the first new community hospital built in the area in three decades.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, PA

Area Wages Top Those in the State

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the first quarter average weekly wage in Montgomery County was higher than the national average. While those in the county averaged $1,176 a week, the nationwide weekly average was reported to be $885.
In fact, Philadelphia , Delaware and Montgomery counties were in the top 25 percent of large counties across the country for their wage levels and wage growth.

PHILADELPHIA COUNTY, PA

Cira Centre South Groundbreaking

Brandywine Realty Trust broke ground last month on its Cira Center South building in the University City section of downtown Philadelphia . The $800 million project will include 2.8 million-square-feet of mixed-use development comprised of offices, hotel, residential, parking and retail on land Brandywine has leased from the university. In addition, the site is part of a Keystone Opportunity Zone, giving tenants who move into the space breaks on state and local taxes. The Postal Service and the University of Pennsylvania , two tax-exempt entities, are lined up to be tenants in the buildings. Cira Centre South is scheduled for completion by the end of 2010.
