Greater Philadelphia Region Achieves Top Percentile in Life Sciences Cluster

A comparative study conducted by the Milken Institute ranks the Greater Philadelphia region second in the study's Overall Composite Index, after only Boston and ahead of Greater San Francisco. The study's full findings were announced this week by several organizations supporting Greater Philadelphia's life sciences sector (an area encompassing parts of Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey and Pennsylvania).
The study also ranks Greater Philadelphia first in its Current Impact Composite Index, which looks at inputs such as employment level, relative size, and industry growth.

The Wistar Institute Obtains Patent for Universal FLU Vaccine Technology; Awarded $4.2 Million
The Wistar Institute obtained a U.S. patent for a novel synthetic vaccine technology with the potential for further development into a universal flu vaccine which could eliminate the need for annual flu shots and protect against future flu pandemics.
U.S. Patent 7,5227,798, “Composition and Method for Preventing or Treating a Virus Infection” covers a variety of peptides that are capable of inducing broad protection against all strains of influenza A virus.
Also, in the first funding dedicated to a project of the Wistar Institute Vaccine Center , the Pennsylvania Department of Health has awarded a grant of $4.2 million to support Wistar's development of a universal flu vaccine.

Entrepreneurs Bootcamp Aims to Make Dreams a Reality
The second annual DreamIt Ventures program kicked-off on May 18, 2009. The budding entrepreneurs moved into their workspace at the University City Science Center at 3711 Market Street on Philadelphia’s Avenue of Technology.
The DreamIt entrepreneurs will receive funding, office space at the Science Center and business advice from entrepreneurial gurus. In exchange, they will be responsible for getting their company to the next stage of growth, which often involves having their company ready for funding and/or launch by the end of August.

Neumann College Becomes Neumann University
On May 1, Delaware County became home to a new university. On that morning, President Rosalie Mirenda announced that Neumann College had received approval (the certificate of authority) from the Pennsylvania Department of Education to become Neumann University. Between 250 and 300 members of the college community gathered in
St. John Neumann Circle, the brand new pedestrian hub of the Aston campus, to hear the news.

Chester County Economic Dev. Council Receives Award
The Chester County Economic Development Council is the 2009 recipient of the
Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission's (DVRPC's) Regional Excellence Award for the work of the Smart Energy Initiative (SEI). SEI works to create green jobs, develop workforce skills, promote business development and investment in Southeastern, PA, and develop similar capacities in other regions of the Commonwealth.
The award was presented to Gary Smith, President/CEO of the Chester County Economic Development Council and Sally Silver, SEI Project Manager at the Four Seasons Hotel in Philadelphia last week.
