UNIVERSITY CITY SCIENCE CENTER TAPS THREE NEW COMPANIES AND FOUR NEW BOARD MEMBERS

Three new companies have joined the Greater Philadelphia region's life sciences cluster as they take up residence at the University City Science Center on Philadelphia's Avenue of Technology, Market Street, in West Philadelphia.

The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) and the GADORE Center USA have established U.S. offices at the University City Science Center on 3711 Market Street. They are the newest participants in the Science Center's Global Soft Landing program, joining companies from France, Spain, Belgium and Singapore.  The National Center for Patient Interactive Research (CPIR) has begun operations at the University City Science Center's Port business incubator located at 3701 Market Street in Philadelphia.

The Science Center also announced the appointment of four new members to its Board of Directors at its annual Shareholders Meeting on June 12 including: Ernest Dianastasis, Managing Director, Computer Aid Inc. (CAI) and Chair, First State Innovation; David R. King, Venture Partner, Quaker BioVentures; Carl Kopfinger, Senior Vice President, Venture Capital and Mezzanine Investment Group, TD Commerce Banknorth; and Tara L. Weiner, Managing Partner, Greater Philadelphia Region, Deloitte LLC.

The Science Center's Global Soft Landing program fosters international business in the U.S. by helping global companies establish a foothold in local life sciences and information technology markets. Philadelphia offers a strategic location between, and within easy reach of, the nation's regulatory/legislative hub in Washington and its financial center in New York. Global Soft Landing provides international companies with fully-equipped laboratories, plug ‘n play offices and access to the Science Center's full suite of business support programs.

The RSC is the largest organization in Europe for advancing the chemical sciences. Supported by a worldwide network of members and an international publishing business, its activities span education, conferences, science policy and the promotion of chemistry to the public.

The establishment of the GADORE Center USA, LLC is an initiative of GADORE (German-American Dialog on Renewable Energy) as a collaborative network for transatlantic exchange and dialog on renewable energy. GADORE's mission is to promote the growth of renewables by bringing together interested parties from industry, government and media. GADORE Center USA is intended for German small and medium-sized businesses from the renewable energy industry that are examining their market chances in the USA, or for companies already planning to establish their own subsidiary in one or more of the 50 states. These incoming companies will be creating green jobs and helping to bring the industry up to speed. The Center is also an important contact point for US-based turbine manufacturers; where they will be connected to responsible new partners, enabling the manufacturers to realize their projects more efficiently, at less risk.

CPIR, which was founded in 2009, believes that unbiased, clinically significant, patient-generated data must be hard wired into the present transformation of health information technology (HIT). This will lead to better health outcomes, a reduction in disparities among vulnerable populations and progress in the adoption of the medical home model. CPIR will conduct research focusing on unbiased, patient reported measurement of the comparative effectiveness of medical practices, both clinical processes and outcomes, which lead to continuous improvement and system wide cost savings.
