Select Greater Philadelphia (Select) is an economic development marketing organization dedicated to attracting companies to the Greater Philadelphia region.

Select assists companies interested in the vicinity by providing detailed information about the 11-county area and a one-stop connection to numerous resources that help companies make informed decisions about locating to the region. Developments at the Navy Yard

University of Delaware Considering a Law School

The University of Delaware is investigating the feasibility of establishing a new law school at its Newark campus.

The university board of trustees authorized officials earlier this month to prepare a feasibility study and a business plan for the proposed school. President Patrick T. Harker said that a final decision is still several years away, and will await refined analysis, additional faculty input and the completion of a targeted fundraising campaign.

Under the university's timetable, the board would be asked in the spring of 2013 to authorize the establishment of a new law school, with the objective of recruiting and hiring the founding law school dean during the 2013–2014 academic year and admitting the first law students for classes beginning in fall 2015. <Read more>

One-Time Biotech Start Up Chooses to Grow in West Philadelphia

Integral Molecular, Inc., a biotechnology company launched at the University City Science Center in 2001, is more than doubling its space with a new 10-year lease at the West Philadelphia research park.

Integral Molecular will expand its operations from the Science Center's Port business incubator at 3701 Market Street to 10,000 square feet of custom-designed, state-of-the-art lab and office space at 3711 Market Street. Integral Molecular is a platform-based biotechnology company that is committed to providing innovative products and services to leading biotech and pharmaceutical companies. <Read more>

Bringing High Tech to Small Business: Meet Bernadine Hawes

Much has been made of the region's transformation from a 19th-century manufacturing economy to one based in the 21st century on technology and innovation. But savvy business leaders understand that technological advancement is as important to today's small manufacturers as it is to emerging biotech and cleantech industries.

WHYY Creates Interactive Media Outlet Covering Regional News

Greater Philadelphia has an innovative new, regional, multimedia website dedicated to journalism, civic dialogue and a high degree of interactivity.

NewsWorks.org is the online home of WHYY News and a growing network of journalism partners, covering Philadelphia and its suburbs, Delaware and South Jersey, with a focus on regional issues, neighborhoods, health, science and the arts.

Newsworks includes several innovative participatory features. Besides offering the opportunity to pose a question or post a comment on news stories, the site allows visitors to rate both the story and to rate others' comments. <Read more>

New College of Design, Engineering and Commerce to Open in 2011 at Philadelphia University

Philadelphia University will launch a new College of Design, Engineering and Commerce in fall 2011. Dr. Ronald G. Kander, director of the School of Engineering at James Madison University, has been named executive dean of the new college, which the university said “will be home to a revolutionary, transdisciplinary curriculum that retains the core learning of each discipline while forging new collaborations between the fields of design, engineering and business.”

“The College of Design, Engineering and Commerce is unique,” said President Stephen Spinelli Jr. “Students will gain expertise in their disciplines and a fluency in the transdisciplinary ways of the 21st -century work world on a much larger scale than what we've seen in higher education to date.” <Read more>

Salvation Army Launches Remediation of KROC Community Center Site in Camden

Commissioner Bob Martin joined Camden and Salvation Army officials in ceremonies launching the capping of the former Harrison Avenue Landfill, marking a milestone in the development of a multimillion-dollar Salvation Army community center that will provide social, cultural and recreational services in one of the nation's poorest cities.

“We are reclaiming this landfill so that the Salvation Army can transform lives,” Commissioner Martin said during a news conference at the landfill. <Read more>

New Partnership to Enhance the Region's Entrepreneurial Initiatives

The University City Keystone Innovation Zone (UC KIZ) has received an $85,000 grant to increase its impact on entrepreneurship in Greater Philadelphia by formally aligning with the University City Science Center's strategic initiative, Quorum.

The award came through the Ben Franklin Technology Development Authority (BFTDA) and the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED). <Read more>

Archer Group Grows in Wilmington and Philadelphia

The Archer Group, a Wilmington, DE-based interactive marketing firm, significantly expanded its regional presence this fall.

In November, Archer opened an office in Old City, Philadelphia. “The expansion will enable us to better serve our Philadelphia clients and to continue our growth to meet regional market demands,” said CEO Lee Mikles.

“Philadelphia has such a great creative energy,” Mikles added, “and we are excited to be a part of it. Since many members of our team currently train from Philly, we have always felts like Philadelphians. This expansion into Philly allows us to strengthen that relationship.” <Read more>

Almac Grows Jobs at New PA Headquarters

The Almac Group, a global provider of drug development services to the pharmaceutical industry, has added 173 jobs to Greater Philadelphia as it prepares to formally open its new U.S. headquarters in Souderton, PA in the spring.

The $120 million, 240,000-square foot facility is now operational and will eventually employ nearly 1,000 in support of Almac's research and pharmaceutical development activities.

Almac Chief Executive Alan Armstrong expressed confidence that 2011 will see continued growth. In addition to the new U.S. headquarters, Almac has added more than 300 jobs in the last year at its Northern Ireland headquarters.

More College Students are Staying in Greater Philadelphia

Greater Philadelphia is retaining more non-native college graduates, according to a new report by Campus Philly, a nonprofit whose mission is to fuel economic growth by encouraging college students to live and work in the region. The organization called on regional employers to develop more paid internship opportunities as a way to further retain graduates and to cultivate potential talent. A survey of 4,600 students and recent alumni of 31 regional colleges and universities found that 48% of students raised elsewhere reported staying in the region after graduation, compared to 29% in 2004. <Read more>
