BURLINGTON COUNTY ANNOUNCES ARTS GRANTS

Twelve Organizations Share $37,427 in Grant Funding

The Burlington County Freeholders awarded $37,427 in grant funding to a dozen non-profit county arts organizations and non-profit groups that showcase the arts. The grants, which require matching funds from the recipients, are part of a $74,854 grant from the NJ State Council on the Arts administered by the County Division of Cultural Affairs and Tourism. The awards reflect a reduction from last year when the County received $99,805 and awarded $46,500 to local arts organizations.

The applicants selected to receive funding include: Bridge Players, which requested funds for the production of the Tony award-winning musical Big River; Burlington County Footlighters, which requested funds for youth programs, children’s workshops, a children’s theater camp, an and intern program for teenagers and young adults; Burlington County Lyceum of History and Natural Sciences/Mount Holly, which requested funds to offer free weekly afterschool arts classes to children; Center for the Arts of Southern New Jersey, which requested funds for art exhibits held throughout the year and Friends of Medford Cultural Arts, which requested funds to create a community of artists, including visual, musical, dramatic and literary.

Also, the Golden Eagle Community Band, which requested funds to present concerts in October, December, March, and May; Main Street Mount Holly, which requested funds to create a new mural on a downtown building in Mount Holly; Mill Race Village Arts & Preservation, which requested funds to be used toward the Annual Ice Carving Festival held in downtown Mount Holly; Moorestown Theater Company, which requested funds for an outreach program; Philharmonic of Southern New Jersey, which requested funds to support its all-volunteer symphony orchestra; Servicios Latinos of Burlington County, which requested funds for a Latino Festival; and Whitesbog Preservation Trust, which requested funds for its annual Blueberry Festival.

The balance of the 2010 grant will be used to support other arts projects sponsored by the County, such as art exhibits, the annual Teen Arts Program, and the Arts in the Park event. All non-profit county arts organizations, as well as other non-profit groups that showcase the arts in Burlington County, were eligible to apply for the funds that may be used for arts activities conducted between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2010.

A panel of peer professionals reviewed the applications and made recommendations to the Burlington County Cultural and Heritage Advisory Committee, which in turn made recommendations to the Board of Chosen Freeholders.
