Regional Economy Begins to Grow Again

The Greater Philadelphia economy started growing again during the first quarter of 2010, according to Select Greater Philadelphia's and IHS Global Insight's Coincident Indicator for the Greater Philadelphia region. The current level of economic activity in the region reached a low value of 90.7 in February, and has risen gradually during the last two months.

Hyundai Motor Company to Import 150,000 Vehicles Per Year Through Port of Philadelphia

The Philadelphia Regional Port Authority and Holt Logistics Corp. have come to an agreement with Hyundai Motor Co. and its logistics affiliate, Glovis of America, to import and process 150,000 Hyundai and Kia vehicles annually through the Port of Philadelphia 's Packer Avenue Marine Terminal (PAMT).

Event at Camden's ACIN Center to Bring Together the Region's Defense Contractors



The Delaware Valley Chapter of the National Defense Industrial Association (NDIA DVC) is sponsoring a national defense event on June 4th at the ACIN Technology Center located at 200 Federal Street, Suite 300 in Camden, NJ. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m.

The event will feature major defense experts from companies at the ACIN Center including Boeing, L3, Lockheed Martin, Aker and others.

The ACIN Center is America’s first small business accelerator dedicated to serving the US Department of Defense and Department of Homeland Security.

Located in Camden, New Jersey and established in 2001 through a contract between the US Army and Drexel University, the mission of the ACIN Technology Center is to identify small businesses and technologies that make information delivery faster, more secure, and more flexible.

The Wistar Institute and University of the Sciences Announce McNeil Professorship to Lead Collaborative Center

The Wistar Institute and University of the Sciences in Philadelphia named Wistar Institute principal investigator Paul M. Lieberman, Ph.D., an expert in gene expression and regulation, as the McNeil Professor of Molecular Medicine and Translational Research. In this role, Lieberman will provide leadership of the Center for Chemical Biology and Translational Medicine (CCBTM) at The Wistar Institute and University of the Sciences.

The CCBTM combines Wistar's strengths in basic biomedical research with University of the Sciences' expertise in medicinal chemistry and pharmacology. The partnership will enable more rapid translation of basic science discoveries into compounds with potential for refinement into new medicines and therapies for patients.

Paul M. Lieberman, Ph.D., McNeil Professor of Molecular Medicine and Translational Research

Science Center's QED Program Makes Second Round of Awards to Life Sciences Researchers

Technologies to advance heart disease treatment and gene therapy received awards from the University City Science Center's QED Proof-of-Concept Program in May. Three researchers from The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Penn Medicine and Rutgers University will each receive $100,000 from the Science Center, a $100,000 match from their supporting institution, and business advice for one year.

This is the second round of awards by the QED Program, the first multi-institutional proof-of-concept program for life science technologies in the U.S. Awards are made to bridge the “valley of death” - the gap between research grants and commercial seed investment - by awarding grants to life science technologies with high potential in the healthcare industry.

US Airways Education Foundation to Award 10K Grants to Worthwhile Institutions

The US Airways Education Foundation is about to enter one of the best parts of the year -- where they get to give away money to worthwhile institutions.  The Foundation is seeking 2010 grant applicants for its Community Education Grant Program. 

The Foundation will award grants of $10,000 to nonprofit organizations located in the airline's hub cities of Charlotte, Philadelphia and Phoenix. Eligibility includes educational programs that respond to the needs of disadvantaged or disabled children, teach or enhance social responsibility and/or enhance academic achievement for children age 18 or younger.

Interested nonprofit organizations should visit www.usairways.com/corporategiving and click Submit a 2010 Education Foundation Grant Application, under the US Airways Education Foundation section, to submit an application.

Inglis Foundation Receives National MS Society Center of Excellence Designation

Inglis Foundation, which provides programs and services to enable people with physical disabilities to live life to the fullest, has been designated as a Center for the Promotion of Excellence in Long-term Care by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

The National MS Society recognizes those community-based programs and facilities that address the long-term care needs of people with MS as an integral part of their mission.

Select Honors Hugh C. Long, II at Spring Celebration Event



Select Greater Philadelphia and local business leaders honored Hugh C. Long, II, Wachovia's Regional President for Pennsylvania and Delaware at Select's Spring Celebration event in late April.  Mr. Long has served as Select Greater Philadelphia's Chair for the past six years, and has played a critical role in the organization's creation, development, and success. 

Under Hugh's leadership, Select raised the necessary funds from the local business and philanthropic community to build an award winning regional economic development program that has helped 52 companies locate in Greater Philadelphia.  These companies will employ over 3,600 people and will occupy nearly two million square feet of space, adding over $600 million to Greater Philadelphia's gross regional product. 

Select would like to thank Hugh Long, for his remarkable dedication to the region.  For the past six years, day in and day out, Hugh has made it his mission to demonstrate to the national and international business community that Greater Philadelphia is a great place to live, work and play.  Mr. Long will continue to serve in a leadership role becoming Select's next Finance Committee Chair.

Online Business Calendar Uncovers Hundreds of Business Meetings in the Region

The economy may have been slow in 2009, but people were busy meeting and doing business at more than 3,500 events, nearly 300 per month, throughout the Greater Philadelphia Region according to a recent analysis of an online regional business calendar by Select Greater Philadelphia and Basecamp Business. The data, aggregated from the first-year use of the Basecamp Business Calendar Network in 2009, reveals that business executives, entrepreneurs, financiers, and others were actively networking throughout Greater Philadelphia to build business.
