The Smart Energy Initiative was established within the Chester County Economic Development Council to support economic growth and sustainability for the new energy economy.

Bernard Dagenais Ponders the Future of Greater Philadelphia
Bernard Dagenais, a key thought leader for Greater Philadelphia's business community, will leave his post as editor of the Philadelphia Business Journal to become president and CEO of the Main Line Chamber of Commerce. Dagenais shared his unique perspective on the future of the region.
"Healthcare and education are the largest employment sectors driving the region's economy, says Dagenais. "In most other metropolitan regions, the dominant sectors are transportation and utilities, which are tied to manufacturing. Healthcare and education are the only sectors that have grown nationally month-to-month through the recession."

Sallie Mae to Move Reston HQ to Delaware

Student loan company Sallie Mae's move from its Reston, Va., headquarters will be completed by March 31. (Gannett STEPHEN J. BOITANO)

SLM Corporation, commonly known as Sallie Mae, announced this month that it will relocate its corporate headquarters near Newark, Del., by March 31, 2011. The relocation to Delaware is consistent with other strategic initiatives the company is taking to align its cost structure with its continuing businesses following the passage of the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act.

University of Delaware Conducts Mapping Study on Oil Spill Path

University of Delaware oceanographer Matt Oliver is mapping where the Gulf oil spill may travel next. Using real-time data of sea surface temperatures, Oliver is generating maps of the Gulf Coast and Eastern Seaboard.
Inside his Global Visualization Laboratory at UD's Lewes campus, Oliver streams the data, overlaid on Google Earth images to nine, 46-inch, flat-screen televisions hardwired together to work as a single large screen. Read more... |
Fisker Automotive Finalizes Purchase of Former GM Plant
American automaker Fisker Automotive finalized its purchase of a former GM factory where it will build plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. The company is now in full possession of the 3.2 million square foot Wilmington Assembly plant in Wilmington, Delaware, for which it paid Motors Liquidation Company (MLC) $20 million. MLC is the holding company formed by General Motors Corporation's bankruptcy. Read more... |

Coriell Receives $6M Award to Support Fight Against Alzheimer's and Parkinson's Disease

Close on the heels of another major award from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Coriell Institute has announced its receipt of a five-year, $6-million NIH contract to manage the National Institute on Aging (NIA) Aging Cell Repository.

Cancer Biologist Dario Altieri to lead the Wistar Institute Cancer Center
Cancer biologist Dario C. Altieri, M.D., has been appointed director of Wistar’s Cancer Center, a National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center since 1972. Altieri will also take on the role of the Institute’s Chief Scientific Officer and professor in the Wistar Molecular and Cellular Oncogenesis Program.
Altieri will join Wistar full-time in September from his previous appointment as professor and chair of the Department of Cancer Biology at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

Penn Medicine at Valley Forge Opens Doors to $30M Outpatient Facility

Penn Medicine at Valley Forge saw its first patient this month at its $30M, 90,000-square-foot outpatient medical building at the intersection of Chesterbrook Boulevard and Swedesford Road in Tredyffrin Township, Chester County.
The three-story building will also serve as a primary care training site for University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine students.

The Pew Charitable Trust Awards $3.8 Million to
Philadelphia-area Arts Organizations
The Pew Charitable Trusts announced $3,846,000 in unrestricted general operating support to eight Philadelphia-area arts and culture organizations last month. Pew provides the grants under its Philadelphia Cultural Leadership Program (PCLP), which annually rewards organizations in the five-county region that demonstrate excellence in operations, fiscal management and programming.
